I’m glad this is the show that got me into K-dramas because not only is it an interesting and heartfelt look into the life of a (n adult!) woman with autism that’s handled very respectfully imo, but I am LIVING for the constant plot twists and dramatic love story. It’s so FUN and fresh to watch after watching American tv and I don’t think I’ve been bored a single minute that I’ve been watching it.

So I’ve made it episode 11 of Extraordinary Attorney Woo. I’m so happy that Jun-ho and Young-Woo are together!! And him saying he’ll be her personal hug chair (after doing independent research in Austin’s so he’s not relying on her to teach him) is so fucking sweet!!!
But for real, do those chairs from France ship internationally? Because they sound v nice
Also Min-woo blackmailing his way into Taesan but having it backfire into getting Young-Woo fired?? If he goes through with this, ughhhh
Also Choi’s dating life makes me feel bad for her. I hope Hairy gets another chance to make another impression. They give me good vibes together if they can get past the awkward first date vibes

Part 2 of my random-Apothecary-Diaries-and-Korean-dramas-parallels posts
The first part is this one
"My love for you is like unrequited love towards a cat."
Gifting her something very non-typical he knew she would love because he knew HER.
Gaining a heckin' lot of knowledge on a highly specific topic she's hyperfixated on just because she talks about it to him and he listens.
Conclusion: the neurodivergent girl x neurotypical guy pairing is always a win. (Watch Extraordinary Attorney Woo, it'll change your life.)

This post contains spoilers for The Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
I recently watched The Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and after a few days I finally figured out what I liked so much about it.
Y’know, besides it being really nice to see a love interest who, despite their ups and downs, is never an asshole.
I mean, I don’t know how autistic people feel about the show. I am sure some like the rep and some hate it for a variety of reasons, and you should listen to what they have to say about it.
But for me, it was exciting to see someone in a show who has restrictive sensory sensitivities that limit what she eats and how she eats it, and — For Once — it is not presented as a character who is picky because they are a spoiled brat or a fussy uptight stick in the mud. This is a character that struggles to eat certain things and it is simply a part of her greater array of character traits.
Even though I am not autistic, and I do not share many of Young-Woo’s other traits, I can see myself in that character. I, too, simply do not eat certain things (although my palate is broader than hers and very different), and I, too, feel awkward in certain social situations where eating and drinking particular things is expected. And it certainly is not about being spoiled or fussy. What a breath of fresh air.
That scene when she told her dad the ham tasted funny and he said to eat it anyway, and after she left he turned around and found all the ham picked out of her gimbap and left behind in an X on her plate —So relatable.
#The Extraordinary Attorney Woo#Woo Young-Woo#food#sensory sensitivity#selective eating#flavor sensitivity#gimbap#kimbap#I could not possibly eat what Young-Woo eats and she could not possibly eat what I eat#and yet I feel we have a kinship in our food experiences#spoilers#I found this in my drafts from a while back#like last year maybe#iloivar#thoughts

Woo Young Woo is extraordinary
Gods, Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a well constructed show. They set up all the dominoes to knock them down one by one. Building a relationship with a mentor, Attorney Jung, just to take him away with stomach cancer and leave her with an incompetent asshole they introduce earlier in the season as specifically antagonistic to Attorney Jung, but willing to do him favours.
The romance arc between Young-woo and Jun-ho hits all the predictable notes, but the timing to leave her feeling cut off from all of her support. Just perfect timing makes the resolution all the sweeter. a straight relationship that feels like it matters and is relatable is a rare and valuable thing. The Hanbada-Taesan rivalry, with each side being antagonistic towards our hero in their own special way. Two privileged CEOs who treat Woo Young Woo as a game piece to be exploited or hidden away. Each acting like their benevolent.
I could go on and on about each little thing, but I don’t want to recap the entire show. If you havent seen it, just go watch it.

um so in the "this is pengsoo" episode, which side are the parents on? like its obvious they're on the defendants side but uhh it was their son that was allegedly murdered? and if they're on behalf of the defense then who filed the case? are people who are allegedly murdered automatically granted a trial?
(i have very little knowledge of the law lol, as is probably obvious. i think this would be too big of a question to google tho)

I really enjoy It’s A Spectrum and came here through the link to the associated Tumblr after finding and reading the comic on Tapas. I would also like to say that I saw you recommended the show Dinosaur to someone in an ask answer, so binged it recently and I absolutely love it so much! I am definitely recommending it to friends. I also checked the release dates and found that all six episodes were released on my mum’s birthday! If you have any show recommendations like Dinosaur, I would love to know. Such good autistic rep is so enjoyable.
Yay I'm glad you enjoyed it! And that's such a coincidence haha
There's not loads of shows out there that centre around an autistic main character, but here's a few I've seen that at least have autistic characters in them:
Extraordinary Attorney Woo - about an autistic lawyer (with a special interest in whales! 🐳) starting her career. It's not perfect (she fits the 'savant' stereotype in a lot of ways) but I still really enjoyed it, and I even got my parents to watch it and I think it helped them understand :)
Heartbreak High - the story isn't about being autistic but Quinni is one of the main cast. She's played by an autistic actress and her experience as an autistic person is explored in several episodes (I haven't finished this one yet so no spoilers!)
Dead End: Paranormal Park - again not about being autistic specifically but one of the main characters, Norma, is confirmed to be autistic. I felt particularly seen by s1 ep3 which explored how she experiences the world and her anxiety around it.
Community - Abed! The creator, Dan Harmon, realised he was autistic himself while writing the character. Plus Community is super funny.
There's also Geek Girl, which just came out on Netflix. I haven't seen this one, but I know that the author of the book it's based on (Holly Smale) discovered she was autistic herself after so many autistic people related to the main character.
I wish I had more for you! Autistic rep is unfortunately pretty sparse, and actually good autistic rep even more so. If anyone has more suggestions I'd love to hear them!
btw I'm currently writing a graphic novel with an autistic lead character so if you're interested in that you should definitely follow @apocalypsebabycomic for updates

Disability representation in dramas
Minor spoilers up to episode 16 of "Will Love in Spring" below.
Initially, this was going to be an appreciation post for the drama because episode 15 and 16 have been my two favorites so far.
But now, it's going to be part vent and part educational post about what it's like to be disabled because I made the mistake of going on MyDramaList and reading some ableist comments about Zhou Youtong's character, Zhuang Jie.
There were quite a few comments calling her character "toxic" for various reasons. And yes, I realize I am absolutely projecting here as another disabled person but that is PRECISELY why I wanted to address this nonsense.
No matter how much therapy you go through, society is a continual uphill struggle for those of us who have to live with one or multiple disabilities. Daily. People will judge you for something that is out of your control and it will hurt you. And sometimes that will make you hurt others.
There will be unhealed traumas. There will be traumas that get triggered, no matter how much "work" you do on them.
I am not an amputee, like Zhuang Jie. But I do have disabilities that have changed my personality and make me react in ways that do not seem "normal" or "healthy" to the able bodied person.
What I love the most about this drama is that it shows a very complex and nuanced portrayal of Zhuang Jie. And I think able bodied people are NOT used to this AT ALL because they've only seen sunny, "live laugh love" representations of disabled people in popular media. We're supposed to be strong and optimistic and be an "obvious" choice to be the perfect romantic lead.
She's messy, and that's what endears her to me.
Intimacy in particular, is a subject that media shies away from showing, especially with obvious physical disabilities. But I was so impressed with how they handled her issues surrounding her prosthetic and everything she explained at the end of episode 16.
People have told her she "only deserves" to be with someone who is also disabled. To be pitied. A man expressed disgust at her body and that was enough to close up her vulnerabilities for years.
Even the most optimistic person will feel the pain of having to deal with that type of judgment and expecting her to be completely open and "green flag central" is incredibly unrealistic and ableist.
It is especially complex to be able bodied (like Zhuang Jie) and then become disabled due to an event or illness. I wouldn't say one is harder than the other, whether to be born disabled or to have it happen suddenly but as someone with both forms - there's a specifically cruel aspect to being used to having something and then having it taken away.
Anyway. I am going to stop here although I could write a whole novel on the ableism of viewers when it comes to disability representation in popular media. (Please never get me started on Extraordinary Attorney Woo -_- )
I'm going to end this with... yes, Zhuang Jie is a fictional character. But disability itself is not a fictional concept and what you say about disabled characters is oftentimes a reflection of your internalized ableism and not some pert/accurate analysis of the character.

I’m further into Extraordinary Attorney Woo and I’m loving it even more. I love Choi and how she looks out (begrudgingly sometimes) for Young-Woo and oh my GOD how Jung-Ho looks at her!!! It makes me scream with glee!! Kwon is annoying but I appreciate that he’s cutthroat with her like he would be with Choi. He’s not being a dick BECAUSE she’s autistic. He def used it to his advantage but it’s just another personality type to him like he uses Chois crush on Jung-Ho. Attorney Jung is making me like him more and more every episode.
And that hinting that the CEO of the competitor law firm is Young-Woo’s mom?!? Ahhhhhh
Anywho, I can’t wait to see more. And that line “If I were a whale, would my mother not have abandoned me?” As a person who was neglected and abandoned by a parent, I cry

Hi guys,
My name is Claudia and I am doing a MA in Korean Studies at SOAS University of London, UK. I'm currently working on my dissertation and I'm basing it on Korean dramas and their subtitles - specifically how subtitles may influence people's opinions about Korean culture and language.
I finally finished organising the main survey I was preparing, which I finally launched yesterday. This survey is the key to my research so it's quite important to me!
To explain it quickly:
> It will take roughly 15 minutes to complete as there are quite a few questions and clips to watch.
> The survey is anonymous but I do collect emails just by default (Don't worry, they're not to be disclosed to anyone. It's just to keep track of numbers and not to have people repeating the survey)
> I have used short clips from the following dramas: The Glory, All of Us Are Dead, Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Squid Games. However no spoilers to the plot have been used - all the clips are a few seconds long and only include idioms, expressions and cultural elements so no spoilers intended nor shown.
> In the last section you'll be asked to watch said clips and reply to the questions related to them but again NO SPOILERS to the plots.
I've received permission to post the link to the survey so here it is: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSfFE8rVQ45bDb.../viewform
I'd greatly appreciate it if you could do the survey - but also understand if you're unable to do it for whatever reason!
Thanks so much
